What is Hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is the spray-on application of grass seed in an all-in-one blend of mulch, grass seed, fertiliser and a temporary pigment that ensures maximum coverage and density of your lawn.

Hassle-free grass seed application

Hydroseeding achieves rapid, lush lawn growth at a fraction of the cost of alternatives - around 75% less expensive than instant turf products like Readylawn.

We create the perfect environment for your lawn to thrive.

Our seed is mixed evenly with a nutrient-rich blend of mulch, grass seed and fertiliser. The germination process kicks off as soon as we combine it with water and spray it on your topsoil with our hydraulic machine. Our method plants the seed mix at optimal depth for germination.

To enhance the growth of your lawn, our mulch made from natural wood fibers helps retain moisture, prevents weed growth, and shields the seed from birds and harsh weather conditions. The nitrogen-based fertiliser included in the mix supports rapid lawn growth.

With our method, we apply the seed mix at the optimal density and uniformity, resulting in a lush and healthy lawn.

Hydroseeding vs Readylawn

Hydroseeding

Cost:

Average of $5.75 per sqm inc GST

Growth rate:

Grass seed is blended with mulch, fertiliser and other additives to promote rapid germination and grass growth. Expect good growth in 2-3 weeks and a full lawn in 4-6 weeks.

Versatility:

Suitable to plant hard-to-access sites - sloping banks, batters, drains and hillsides.

Watering:

The mulch helps retain moisture, reducing the amount of water required to keep at optimal moisture level.

Aftercare:

Water your lawn, fertilise regularly.

Readylawn

Cost:

Average of $23.00 per sqm installed inc GST

Growth rate:

Readylawn is an instant lawn. However, the roots need time to establish and penetrate the underlying soil, so optimal growth can be slower than hydroseeding.

Versatility:

Not suitable for installation on sloping sites or irregular areas.

Watering:

No protective layer to protect or assist moisture retention during the establishment period.

Aftercare:

Water your lawn, fertilise regularly.

Erosion control

The mulch in our hydro seed blend contributes to soil stabilisation and is a great solution to help control erosion or sediment loss in at-risk areas like slopes and banks.

In general Spring and Autumn are in the most recommended time of year for growing. However, we can hydroseed all year round - some seasons establish grass cover quicker than others.

How do I prepare my lawn for hydroseeding in NZ?

The better your topsoil surface is prepared, the more beautiful your finished lawn will be. Your topsoil layer should be clear from weeds and debris, have an even depth of around 100mm, and have a level finish. The soil surface should be firm but leave an impression if you walk on it.

See our before-care guide for more info

If your existing topsoil is poor quality or your soil area needs to be raised to level it, additional topsoil may be required to prepare your lawn for hydroseeding. We can assist with topsoil and preparation.

Can you help me prepare my site before hydroseeding?

Yes, we have the equipment and topsoil supply to prepare your site if you need assistance. Get in touch to discuss your project.

What if my site isn’t level or tidy enough to apply hydroseed?

We have the right gear, experience and topsoil supply to clear and prep your site. Get in touch to discuss your project.

Do I need to fertilise my lawn once hydro seeded?

Our hydroseed formula contains a fertiliser to nourish the lawn in the first stages of growth. Regular fertilising once your lawn is established will keep it lush and healthy. It is essential to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when fertilising, as incorrectly applied fertiliser can lead to burn spots on the grass and harm the growth of the lawn.
